Reharmonise and improvise guide
CADENCE · REHARMONISE AND IMPROVISE START Learn → Practice & review → Explore jazz → Piano or Guitar → Begin the original example. Two routes home is an original four-bar Dm7 → G7 → Cmaj7 melody. Hear the original and a D♭7 substitute. Each comparison must play through before it counts as heard. Interrupted playback does not count. Guess which bass moves a semitone down into the destination; imagine or sing its arrival first. YOUR LIBRARY Library → a piece → Score analysis → choose bars and local major key → Reharmonise · Piano/Guitar. The first module accepts 1–8 reviewed bars, no more than 48 quarter-note beats and 2–16 written seventh chords, with clear thirds and sevenths and a dominant seventh resolving a fifth down. It selects the first eligible pair; narrow the selection to study another one. Unreviewed PDF pages, including a carried-in chord’s page, cannot supply an exercise. A full editable copy must fit Compose’s existing limits: one part, one meter and key, supported rhythms/clefs and up to 128 complete bars. Unsupported MusicXML is preserved and reported before the lesson starts. HEAR AND EXPLAIN The comparisons are teaching reductions: root bass plus thirds and sevenths, with the same upper voicings, timing and dynamics in both versions. Only the selected bass pitch changes. Written extensions and slash basses are omitted; the original structured chord symbols are preserved in the source link. Isolate Bass, Guide tones, Bass & guide tones, or add the Written melody. The melody layer uses the first voice of the selected staff, including its written simultaneous notes. It is not automatic melody extraction. The original and substitute share the sounding third/seventh pair, exchanging roles: G7 has B and F; D♭7 has F and C♭. The score notebook remains editable, with alternative interpretations. Melody compatibility is explored by ear, not decided by a universal substitution rule. PLAY Piano: select a MIDI keyboard, choose Listen to my keyboard, play the third and seventh of each chord in the substitute progression, and release the whole pair between changes. Inversions and octave doublings count; extra pitch classes do not. The check measures pitch classes and chord order, not smoothness, fingering, rhythm or expressive quality. Guitar: follow the suggested guide-tone shapes in your tuning/capo, hear them, then play the route. Your report is stored as self-reported practice. This module does not use microphone chord recognition or record guitar audio. SAVE A REHARMONISATION Save my reharmonisation creates a full editable copy in My compositions, linked to the original. It preserves written notes and original PDF references. Only the selected chord symbol changes to a plain tritone substitute. For a carried chord, the new symbol starts at the selected passage boundary. Written accompaniment is not automatically rewritten: edit it in Compose. Compose plays its written notes; the pathway’s audition generates bass and guide tones. The displayed alternative in the pathway is the teaching version; your saved edited score opens separately. Reopening reuses your composition. RECORD AN IMPROVISATION — PIANO / MIDI Choose Original or Tritone substitute and a tempo from 60–160 bpm. Release all keys and sustain pedal. Record one pass, after four quarter-note count-in pulses. Use your keyboard’s own sound while playing. The take keeps velocity, physical releases and sustain messages. Recording uses native MIDI timestamps relative to the estimated audible accompaniment start, with an optional -300…300 ms offset for the current keyboard/output setup. It does not grade latency or timing. Physical hardware calibration still needs testing. A take spans the selected passage, up to 48 seconds at the slowest tempo. Changing app focus, MIDI connection or source, pressing panic, playing before the count-in, or cancelling stops that incomplete take. A completed unsaved take survives navigation and failed saves in memory: explicitly save or discard it before starting another. Unsaved takes do not survive quitting the app. Save the take, then replay it over either harmony. The same recorded notes are used; this does not transpose or rewrite your phrase. Playback must finish before the take counts as listened. A saved take retains its original study’s harmony and tempo even if you later edit the separate reharmonised composition. Up to 100 takes / 100,000 MIDI events are retained; delete older takes to make room. Neither deletion nor recording creates a performance score. Reflect on one choice. Piano completion needs a saved reharmonisation and a new, saved, listened take from this session. Guitar completion needs the saved reharmonisation and your reflection on the phrase you played. Skipping is always available. Observations about reaching a chord third describe notes; they are not judgements of musical quality. RETURN INDEPENDENTLY Hearing, explaining, playing and creating each have a separate review schedule, also separate between piano and guitar. Clean first answers on independent returns can extend that skill’s interval. Hints, missed answers and retries remain supported. Guitar reports and creative reflections prompt a revisit without measured mastery. A creative return asks for a new piano take, rather than reusing a previous one as new evidence. Due reviews appear on Practice home. This is a transparent practice policy, not a validated model of learning. Changes to the original score invalidate new evidence against the old study. Previous takes, analyses and compositions remain stored; reopen the current source to begin a fresh study. The current module reviews the same passage; automatic transfer to a new key is future work.
