Living courses guide

Version 0.22 also supports EPUB and cross-book goal pathways. See EPUB and
pathways guide.txt; the PDF chapter workflow below remains available under
Library → Books & chapters.

CADENCE — A BOOK YOU CAN PLAY

Open Library → Books & chapters → Try original chapter. The included three-page piano
chapter works offline and includes two editable scores made from the same note
data as the original printed exercises. It begins unreviewed so you can try the
whole workflow. The example PDF is in Resources/ImportExamples/chapter.pdf.

YOUR FIRST CHAPTER

1. Choose Add a chapter, select a method-book PDF, and enter the book, author,
edition and chapter title. Select 1–8 consecutive PDF pages. These numbers are
physical PDF positions, not printed page numbers. Add a large chapter in parts.
The book PDF is copied locally; the original is never rewritten.
2. Build lessons manually, or choose Propose outline. AI sends only the selected
chapter excerpt, not the whole book. The default is GPT-6.1 Sol with high
reasoning. Other existing transcription models are available. The request
uses your OpenRouter key in Settings and requires ZDR routing. It cannot
silently fall back to a provider that does not meet that requirement.
3. Check the lesson order, page links, paraphrases, exercise boundaries and
uncertainties against the original. Edit or add lessons as needed. Each
lesson separates a book paraphrase from learning goals and practice guidance.
Mark the chapter outline reviewed when you have checked it.
4. For a playable lesson, choose Prepare editable notation. This opens the
existing page queue for just that lesson's 1–4 consecutive pages. Explicitly
start its page requests there. Review failures, retry individual pages, and
apply any staged replacement through the existing PDF workflow. Alternatively
attach an existing editable score for the same instrument, including one you
transcribed by hand. Attaching a score never approves it automatically.
5. Choose Review notation & source. Correct pitches, rhythms, rests, voices and
page joins in Compose beside the original. Mark every imported page reviewed.
Back to lesson returns you to the course. Choose up to 16 bars and a piano
staff, confirm that this selection matches the source exercise, and choose
Use these reviewed bars. An incomplete import or pending replacement cannot
   become a course answer key.
6. Listen, Follow the notes with MIDI, Play in time where supported, open recall
exercises, or ask the coach about this lesson and its recorded evidence.
Ask my coach opens a prepared question for you to send; it makes no automatic
paid request. The original book is not sent with that coaching question.
7. Save a reflection about what you noticed. “I've explored this lesson” is your
own report, distinct from measured practice. All lessons remain accessible.

A SMALL NEXT SESSION

The course suggests one due review, a small new lesson, and a musical application
when suitable evidence exists. It explains why each item is suggested. It reads
existing practice results and their spaced-review schedules; there is no second
course schedule and no automatic mastery percentage. Timing difficulties with
matched pitches can lead to a rhythm-focused suggestion. This first planner
uses chapter order, prerequisite recommendations, reflections and exact-source
practice evidence. It does not yet estimate general skill mastery or optimise
sessions across multiple courses, goals, time budgets or transfer assessments.

Guided MIDI is supported note reading, not a fluency or timing grade. Timed
results describe the actual tempo, selected staff and input conditions. Recall
and self-reported passage work remain separately labelled. Suggestions based
on these observations are transparent heuristics, not validated learning claims.

CHANGES, SAVING AND RECOVERY

Editing the outline keeps up to 20 prior revisions and requires outline review
again. Revisions lets you read and copy earlier lesson text. Source or exercise
selection changes cannot silently reuse an earlier transcription. Changing the
music invalidates its course approval; earlier results remain attached to the
earlier music. A cosmetic score title change retains matching evidence.

Books, courses and reflections live in courses.json; PDFs are in PDF Sources.
Scores, library notes and the existing practice history retain their independent
stores. Back up the complete Cadence data folder, available in Settings. The current
course store is format 3 (formats 1–2 migrate); practice and scores stay format 4.

An outline job is saved before sending. A restart leaves an interrupted request
stopped, with no automatic retry. If only saving the received reply fails, Save
received reply again saves the in-memory reply without another model call. Keep
Cadence running until it saves: that unsaved reply does not survive quitting.
Paid requests may still be charged after cancellation or network failure.
Reported costs are shown when supplied; requests without a reported cost are
counted explicitly. There is no guaranteed per-request dollar ceiling or price
estimate. Your provider/account spending limit remains the spending control.

LIMITS OF THIS FIRST SLICE

Up to 50 books, 100 chapters and 12 lessons per chapter. Each chapter excerpt is
up to 8 consecutive pages / 12 MB for an outline request. Original books can be
up to 100 MB / 1,000 pages. Each music lesson identifies one continuous exercise
on up to 4 consecutive pages. Notation import retains its existing page/score
limits and supported subset. Play in time requires one staff and 1–8 complete
bars in 2/4, 3/4 or 4/4 at 40–160 bpm. Other music remains editable and playable;
unsupported assessments explain their limits.

This version does not automatically transcribe a whole book, infer reliable
physical technique, or claim that one successful pass means mastery. Source
reviews are the learner's checks, not guarantees of transcription accuracy.

Verification used the original chapter, synthetic model replies and virtual
MIDI. No paid model requests or physical keyboard tests were made for this update.
