Follow the changes guide
CADENCE — FOLLOW THE CHANGES START WITH THREE CHORDS Chord lab → Follow the changes opens Dm7 → G7 → Cmaj7, a ii–V–I in C major. Select a chord to see all its spelled tones, their degrees, a piano voicing, and compact guitar suggestions in your chosen tuning and capo position. Expand the fretboard for every chord tone. The piano suggestions prefer small movements from the previous chord; common tones and moving voices are shown. Hear voicing plays the selected piano suggestion; click a guitar diagram to hear that shape. Hear the change plays this chord and the next. CHOOSE A FOCUS Roots: just the root in any octave. This exercise ignores slash bass. Thirds & sevenths: just those two guide tones, in either order/register. Shell voicings: root, third and seventh, plus any printed slash bass. Complete chords: every structured tone, including alterations and extensions, plus any printed slash bass. This intentionally does not accept omitted fifths or extensions; use shell mode to practise a smaller voicing. Guide/shell modes require a third and seventh in every sounding chord. A triad, suspended chord, sixth chord or omitted third/seventh produces an explanation and asks you to choose roots/complete chords. It does not invent a seventh. Some extended chords have too many tones for a compact guitar shape. The app says so instead of dropping tones. Suggested shapes still need your judgment about reach, comfort and fingering. Guitar diagrams show low string at left; the expanded fretboard supports left-handed display. PRACTISE WITH MIDI Choose Practise these changes, select your keyboard and Listen to keyboard. Play the requested tones, then release all physical keys to submit an answer. Octave doublings and inversions are accepted, except that a printed slash bass must be lowest in shell/complete modes. Wrong or incomplete answers stay on the same chord and identify missing/extra tones. Correct answers move to the next. The exercise gathers the notes played before every key is released. A rolled chord is accepted; simultaneity, rhythm, note length, dynamics, pedal technique and physical fingering are not assessed. Sustain does not combine separate answers. Release held keys when starting/resuming. Focus loss, playback, navigation and device changes pause input. Use Clear held notes if needed. Show tones & voicings and Hear example mark that chord as assisted. Exploring again during a pass also marks the current chord assisted. Each committed answer saves its notes, target, mode, ordinal, hint flag and source revision. Misses remain in history after a successful retry. Failed saves retain the exact pending answer and do not advance; choose Save answer again after fixing storage, or explicitly discard it. Pending answers are held in memory only. These exercises do not yet schedule their own spaced reviews or grade fluency. YOUR OWN MUSIC In Compose, choose a passage and Follow changes beside Chord symbols. In Library, choose a passage in Overview (or another notebook tab), then Follow changes. Studies also offers Follow changes for its selected part and bars. Choose 1–16 bars, up to 64 changes. If symbols occur on multiple staves, select which staff to follow. A prior symbol carries into a selection until the next change. Positions refer to the original bar indices and meter beats. Only printed/entered structured chord symbols are used. There is no inference from melody, reharmonization, key guessing or automatic Roman-numeral analysis of your piece. PDF chord recognition is an AI draft: review the symbols first. N.C. remains visible and breaks voice-leading suggestions. MIDI practice skips N.C. and moves between sounding chords, without grading the duration of rests. Notation and score playback are unchanged. Voicings are separate suggestions. Changing the source music invalidates the open exercise; reopen from the piece. Renaming it does not invalidate saved evidence. Recent matching results can inform a piece's learning pathway when you choose to include practice evidence; nothing is sent to a model automatically. No AI key or paid call is needed. TESTING Core tests cover chord meanings, voicings and progression behavior; native tests exercise persistence and MIDI interruptions. Desktop fixtures run complete MIDI passes for the example and an editable piece. The physical Roland FP-10 is still to be checked over USB; virtual MIDI checks do not certify that hardware.
