EPUB and pathways guide
CADENCE — BOOKS INTO MUSICAL PATHWAYS START WITH YOUR TWO BOOKS Open Learn → Courses → Use my books to begin. This pathway was designed around How to write songs on keyboards and The Jazz Piano Book by Mark Levine. Choose your own lawfully held files in the file chooser. The app does not search your Downloads folder automatically. Check the displayed sources, then choose Create my pathway. Creating the pathway makes local copies of the two originals; it makes no AI request. The Rooksby edition opens at THREE CHORDS FROM ONE (INVERSIONS), reading section 21 in the inspected file. Its SECTION 3 opening supplies the composition link. The Levine edition opens at PDF pages 26–27, printed pages 17–18, Three-Note Voicings. Choose the equivalent sections/pages if your edition differs. EPUB section numbers identify reading-order files, not printed page numbers. MAKE CHORD CHANGES SOUND SMOOTH Five steps connect the two sources: 1. One chord, three shapes — C major inversions. 2. Connect C, F and G — nearby shapes and comfortable transitions. 3. Follow the guide tones — thirds and sevenths through Dm7–G7–Cmaj7. 4. Find it again in F — try the relationship in another key. 5. Write four bars of your own — voicings, rhythm and a musical choice. The four playable studies are original Cadence arrangements. Their rhythm, register and layout are not claimed as exact transcriptions of the books. Paraphrases of the source and added practice instructions are labelled separately. Your books are not included in the distributed app or source. The overview offers 10-, 15- or 25-minute suggested sessions. Choose a focus: a little of everything, smoother playing, or writing your own music. It brings back an eligible due review, suggests a small next step, and reserves time for composition. Every step stays open. The times are guidance, without a countdown. Each lesson places playable notation beside the book. Hear the study first. Read the source and check the chapter guidance, then review its linked notation in Compose before assessed practice. These are separate approvals. You can edit the guidance and notes; changes that affect the answer key require a new review. The EPUB panel offers contents, section search, adjustable text size, Read and Illustrations modes, and a larger reading window. PDF originals remain available with their existing page controls. PRACTICE, REVIEW AND EVIDENCE Reviewed studies reuse Wait for me, Play in time and local recall activities. Guided MIDI checks pitches; timed MIDI checks the supported staff's pitches and entrances. The guide-tone studies assess the upper staff in timed practice; listen to or add the bass without claiming a two-hand timing assessment. Saved practice results use the existing spaced-review schedule. Misses and supported attempts return sooner; later comfortable recalls can increase the interval. Immediate repeats do not push reviews far into the future. The pathway reads these schedules rather than keeping a second progress ledger. Recommendations name their reason. A due result with matched pitches but weak timing suggests steadying the transition. Practice evidence belongs to the exact score revision, passage, staff and assessment conditions. Playing the C example does not complete the F example. Changed or unreviewed studies return for review. Reflections and supported attempts remain distinct from timed performance. This is a transparent first session policy, not a calibrated mastery measure. It does not yet diagnose physical technique, measure every skill across all courses, or prove transfer to arbitrary unfamiliar music. KEEP A COMPOSITION Start my composition creates four empty piano bars with editable C–F–G–C chord symbols. Change the progression, add nearby voicings, and choose a rhythm or top-note melody. It appears in My compositions; the four studies appear under Sheet music. Continue my composition reopens the same score rather than creating a duplicate. Use the return-to-lesson link after editing. Play the phrase and save a reflection about a choice you made. The reflection can record that you listened back; it is self-report, not an automatic creativity or performance grade. A later musical edit marks the previous reflection as belonging to an earlier version. Empty scores cannot receive a saved reflection. If a study save fails, the overview offers Restore missing studies, including after restarting. This repairs the original study IDs from the saved pathway without reimporting the books or making another model request. OTHER EPUB AND PDF CHAPTERS Library → Books & chapters → Add a chapter accepts EPUB or PDF. EPUB is the preferred reading source when its text and illustrations are available: contents, searchable sections and readable text survive without OCR. PDF is useful when exact printed layout is essential. Neither format makes printed notation automatically editable. Choose up to eight EPUB reading sections or PDF pages and add your own lessons, or explicitly request an AI outline. EPUB outline requests send only the selected text and supported illustrations, up to 60,000 UTF-8 text bytes, 12 illustrations and 8 MB of image data. The whole EPUB is never attached to that request. PDF outlines continue to send only the selected pages. OpenRouter requires ZDR and uses the chosen model; Sol with high reasoning remains the recommendation. For an EPUB music lesson, select one to four illustrations. Cadence creates a small local PDF from those images and opens the existing notation-import queue. Preparing it does not call a model. Importing a page is an explicit paid action. Review and retry work as with other imports; the lesson still links to the original EPUB. Keyboard diagrams may omit rhythm or octave, so expect to make musical decisions and corrections. Plain text alone is not a notation source. SUPPORTED EDITIONS AND LIMITS EPUB 2 and 3 with XHTML reading sections and JPEG, PNG, GIF or WebP illustrations are supported, up to 50 MB. This reader uses its own typography. Publisher CSS, scripts, remote resources, embedded audio/video and SVG artwork are omitted. Fixed-layout EPUBs are shown in the reading layout, so a PDF may be preferable for those editions. Encrypted book content is rejected; Cadence does not remove DRM. Optional obfuscated fonts can be ignored because the reader uses local fonts. The exact book bytes and reading-order links are retained locally. Unsafe archive paths, duplicate entries, excessive expansion, malformed XML and custom entities are rejected. Source text cannot execute scripts or fetch remote pages. Current course storage is format 3, including the song pathway. Formats 1–2 migrate on save, preserving previous bytes through the recovery mechanism. Practice and editable score formats remain 4. Use this app version after upgrading; older versions do not understand EPUB sources and goal pathways. VERIFICATION Core tests cover parsing, hostile archives/markup, selected-excerpt requests, source identity, migration, session selection and original score correctness. Native tests cover local storage, review gates, virtual MIDI, spaced review, composition revisions, failed saves and repeat-safe repair. Desktop scenarios cover the overview, smaller window, EPUB text/illustrations, PDF and composition. The actual Rooksby EPUB and Levine PDF were inspected locally. No paid model request or physical FP-10 test was performed for this update.
